The applicant must meet the following requirements in order for the application to be accepted:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Live in United Way’s service area 
  • Have a valid driver’s license in North Dakota or Minnesota 
  • Show proof of employment or status as a full-time student
  • Must demonstrate the ability to budget for vehicle expenses   
  • Does not have any DUI/DWI convictions within the last 7 years
  • Does not have any sexual offenses, or violent crimes on their record 
  • Within the last year has no more than two moving or traffic violations
  • The household does not own any other vehicles 
  • Provide proof of household income, applicants must fall in the extremely low to low-income limit as defined by HUD for more information please visit


  • Preference will be given to applicants with child(ren) under the age of 18 living within the home 
  • If the application is approved, recipients with children under the age of 8 years old must have proper car seats for each child. Car seats will be inspected by Safe Kids or another approved entity to ensure they are installed correctly.
  • Recipients will be responsible for all vehicle-related expenses, including but not limited to; fuel, insurance, repairs and routine maintenance.
